Here are some tips from Nurture with Botanics to start your wellness journey:
1. Make Citrus your best friend
Citrus fruits— like lemons, oranges and grapefruits are an excellent source of antioxidants, vitamins, and nutrients. Vitamin C, fiber, folate and potassium are some vitamins and minerals that support the immune system. The best part of citrus fruits is that they keep us hydrated in fact, the peels of these citrus fruits carry similar vitamin and mineral benefits. One simple tip is to keep your citrus rinds in the freezer for later use. Citrus rinds are a great addition to teas or soup stock.
2. Nourish with herbs
In her herbalism journey, Lashawna has discovered many of the powerful herbs for our health. To keep your health flourishing, focus on herbs that support our immune system and stress levels that are key right now. Adaptogens are a class of herbs that relieve some symptoms associated with stress and our adrenal levels. Herbs— including tulsi, chaga mushroom, maca, ashwagandha and rosemary are just a few adaptogenic herbs that are great to explore. Herbs for immunity include ginger, elderberry, oregano, garlic, echinacea and sage. There are many ways to nourish our bodies with these herbs, but the simplest and effective ways are through tea infusions and incorporating herbs in cooking. As with powerful herbs, it's always best to consult a practitioner before deeply experimenting with powerful herbs.
3. Tea is magical
Teas— including black teas and herbals have a range of possible health benefits. In times of health concerns, it’s important to up the amount of tea we consume daily. Lashawna’s preference is green tea and various herbal blends. Green tea is an excellent source of powerful antioxidants. Studies have also shown that drinking three cups of green tea a day supports immunity and microbiome health.
4. Support your local businesses
Local businesses are now advertising unique offerings in this time of need. Things such as virtual fitness classes, virtual meditation classes and special deliveries/ pickups. Choosing to buy local in support of your health and wellness can dually help to keep local businesses running. Developing new routines in this time can be hard but taking little actions can help. For instance, meditating daily or taking a bath with locally made products.
5. Plants are great company
Not only do plants add greenery and life to any place, the progression of seeing them grow is so unique. Try adding a plant or two in your home. Most local plant shops are now offering online delivery. Another great option in gardening! If you’re lucky enough to have outdoor space, this is the perfect time to start your summer garden. Even if you don’t have an outdoor space to garden you can always start with pots in your home or on your balcony.
6. You're not alone
We might be living in difficult circumstances right now that doesn’t allow us to physically see our loved ones, but let's not forget to stay connected in other ways. There’s now so many ways to stay connected with our friends and family, through apps like skype, zoom and house party. Simply picking up the phone will do the trick too!
Our health and wellness are supercritical right now. We are all dealing with major changes in our lives right now that is affecting our routines, mindsets and health. Taking some of these small steps will be a step in the right direction.
